By Jillian Erasmus, marketing manager of About IT
Our marketing team has been able to embrace a new work method that has been tremendously positive. We can collaborate better as a team so that we can get the job done no matter where we are, regardless of time zones, and irrespective of interruptions such as load shedding.
It was strengthened and responsive leadership that led to this approach. Our founder and CEO, Gerrit Olivier, brought Susan Wantenaar into her new role as director of Operations. Susan has been part of our businesses since she was a customer in 2011 so she has a deep understanding of the business and what makes it tick. In her new role as director of operations, she immediately eased many of the operational pressures from Gerrit’s shoulders.
As a director she has also been able to put many of Gerrit’s forward-looking ideas into practice. Gerrit had originally intended to implement these methods of working himself but daily operational demands had kept him from being able to realise his goal. With Susan on board, however, she was able to bring them to fruition. We now have a four-day work week. We dedicate the fifth to training, giving our people that all-important time to complete a business intelligence, ERP on-premise and cloud course or other training crucial to keeping them relevant in the market and upskilling to ensure customers get the best skills. We also work flexitime, remotely or on the go when we’re mobile. We’ve really been able to embrace the latest methods that take our modern lifestyles into consideration.
It couldn’t have happened at a better time. We have grown phenomenally as technology has advanced over the past few years. We have new customers in new industries in addition to our existing customers. We’re delivering advanced new solutions, such as cloud ERP, business intelligence (BI) solutions, and custom software development.
Additionally, marketing is a responsibility that never rests and communication and collaboration are key to successful marketing. Now we can unite the two elements. These new ways of working enable us to communicate and collaborate whenever and wherever we are, evolving our operational culture to a situation where we have marketing that’s always on.
There are a lot of other benefits to evolving our work culture to include four-day work weeks, dedicated training days, remote working and mobile working. Load-shedding is an unfortunate reality that isn’t likely to end soon. Flexitime, remote and mobile working really help to overcome the challenges load-shedding presents. Traffic is another major challenge for many people in South Africa’s large urban centres and this culture and work methods again help people to deal with those. Particularly when you consider that we cannot separate our personal and professional lives taking responsibilities such as children and more into account.
As a marketer, I look to grow the company regardless of the many challenges we all face on a daily basis. Being able to make a Zoom or Skype call, use WhatsApp and other mobile technologies that connect my team, wherever we happen to be, and keep the wheels turning is crucial to that goal.
Our team is focused, efficient, optimised, and using better technologies to stay connected, with transparent communications that help us collaborate to put our best foot forward. We’re able to fully embrace this evolved work culture, thanks to forward-looking leadership, and enhance our marketing on an international scale spanning South Africa, Malawi and the US. And that means we’re continually evolving to deliver a trustworthy experience that provides guaranteed solutions that add value to your business.
